The new Curriculum
The world has passed through evolutionary changes and so is the brain that led to this .Thus, past learning methods are no more suitable for this new digital generation.Educators and syllabus designers have developed a new curriculum that provides an efficient acquisition of knowledge that leads to the appearance of mature citizens who communicate in oral and written messages, conscious about personal identity and at the same time open to modernity and the world.
What is a curriculum?
The curriculum refers to the lessons taught at school .It is the knowledge, the skills and the competencies learners are expected to learn in a certain stage. The new curriculum is a shift from a paradigm of knowledge transmission into a paradigm of interaction and integration.Learners are no more spoon fed they are active partners .They are the center of the teaching-learning process. They are supposed to acquire values and cross-curricular competencies that are all linked together. This latter is done through a set of objectives.Talking about that leads us to discuss teachers and learners roles.
The role of teachers in the new curriculum:
Teachers are considered facilitators and guides. They are no more transmitting knowledge using spoon feeding.Instead, they encourage learners to feed themselves by helping them to be autonomous and self-confident .A good teacher is the one who has efficient classroom management that provides learners with a relaxed, friendly atmosphere full of respect and appreciation. Also, teachers are motivators .To get learners motivated ,they should have well prepared lesson plans that meet their learners interests , learning styles(VAKT) and they should deal with real life problem solving situations. In addition to that,on going assessment is a key word since it helps both teacher and learner to shed some light on weaknesses to be remediated.(diagnostic, formative and summative assessment).
When teachers do their roles, learners will be active and motivated to have an efficient acquisition of knowledge. They will search, discover, analyse and create .Also ,they will ask questions and fetch for answers. They will broaden their horizons .Also;they will use cross-curricular competencies and core values within one body of knowledge.
The purpose of teaching English:
Teaching English at middle school is of crucial importance for learners. It leads to their intellectual, emotional, physical and social development. This language aims at helping learners to be aware of the changes and challenges that are happening in the world through their access to technology and science .When learners finish their compulsory education they will be able to acquire communicative competencies .This latter allows them to use English for different purposes in and outside school.
Since English is the language of technology, new inventions and discoveries, learners come across it daily and randomly . This encourages them to learn it.English is found in all the fields of life and interests. In sports’ termenology, music and arts, language learning ,Islamic, social and exact sciences and in the field of civics.)
As North African learners of a foreign language ,we find that they have a greater chance and ability to acquire the language , thanks to different criteria:
1.The rich sound system of Arabic and Tamazight.
2.Knowledge of French using the Latin scripts.
3.Background knowledge about scientific methods ,social sciences and technological evolutions.
4.Openness to the world .The desire to know about others cultures and religions respecting differences and protecting personal identity.
5.The acquisition of civic concepts such as the freedom of expression, democracy, solidarity…etc
