How to Enrich learners vocabulary about animals
Animals are a part of our lives . We find them everywhere . It is obligatory to raise learners awareness about the importance of protecting and taking care of them.During this lesson we will plant in our learners some core values towards these creatures.
The lead in:
The teacher starts the lesson using a documentary video about nature and animals .She gives learners the freedom to talk about personal experiences.Do they have animals?.Did they visit the zoo ?.what animals do they like?……..etc
1.As usual,I always use the group work because it’s the best way that guarantees an efficient learning.Pupils learn better from each other.
Naming groups using the target structure is also essential. It makes learners live the situation. In this lesson ,names will be used from the target.Pupils are free to choose their favorites .Example; The lions group, the cats group, the Tigers group……………..etc
2.The teacher provides each group with animals that are stuck on popsicle sticks and they contain scrambled letters
3.The Pupils will compete to order the names of the animals using given letters
4.We correct on the board. Then comes part two.
Pupils will be given different kinds of food and habitats(shelters). They compete to match each animal with the appropriate food and shelter or habitat. Also :they classify them (wild ,domestic, pet)
5.As a production, each group chooses one animal and writes a descriptive paragraph about it.It’s preferable that each group chooses a different animal with a different category ,ie ,wild, domestic and pet to have different examples.
6.You go even further by letting them ask each other about the animals’ food, habitat …..etc to practice more.
How to design these materials.
These materials are hand made, all you need is popsicle sticks, colour them then stick the pictures of animals. Finally write the letters.
