⦁ Some tips to motivate learners.
I was watching my father in his small garden looking after his plants and trees .
With a soft smile on his face and a tender feeling inside his heart. Listening to
his wise words about how to take care of things to get fruitful results .From his speech ,
I realized how proud and happy he was .
His words were like magic ,his care was like a wand that cost a spell on me .
It made me travel in dreams .I’m in my classroom ,no it is not ,it is my garden.
The pupils were my plants .They were looking me in the eye waiting for me
to look after them .
At the beginning ,I didn’t understand what to do and I felt sorry for them but later I realized my duty.If plants need the appropriate soil ,water and light to grow , my kids need the appropriate atmosphere, the smart tasks and the motivation to develop.
I have to provide them with the right elements to see them grow and to sense the feeling that my father had.
Pupils are the center of the teaching-learning process .They are like plants with different colors ,shapes and sizes but they all need the three: the soil ,the water and the light.
As a teacher ,I have to ask myself :who are my learners ?What do they need ?How can I help them?…etc
A.The soil(The suitable atmosphere):
Pupils have the right to study in a secure environment full of respect ,appreciation and encouragement .As a teacher,I cannot reach that without specific strategies in CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT.
*What is classroom management:
They are all the skills ,techniques and strategies that the teacher uses inside his classroom to:
_To provide learners with a safe atmosphere for better learning and positive outcomes.
_To facilitate social ,intellectual and emotional growth of learners.
_To gain time by decreasing the misbehaviors(If the teacher stops each time to correct a certain behavior ,he will cut the sessions shore and learners focus)
*How to establish good classroom management?
1.Make a contract:
The first contact with learners is the right time to set classroom rules .As teachers of a foreign language ,it’s advisable to use the mother tongue to ensure that all learners understand .And to set things clear right from the beginning.
Talking and shouting are useless and they lead to more troubles .Pupils find it interesting to tease the teacher and watch him get crazy .So, eye contact is the best solution to keep the lesson running ,and to send implicit warnings to misbehaved pupils.
3.A good relationship:
Mutual respect is of crucial importance for both parties .If the teacher gets to understand his learners ,he will find different ways to control their behavior and to change their attitudes.
A good strategy that the teacher can use,is the 5mn advice. Each session, the teacher starts his lesson by using a saying or a proverb with a moral behind .Pupils read and deduce the meaning .It’s used to correct certain unpleasant behaviors .Also,it can be used to encourage learners.
5.Contact the family:
Some of the pupils can’t be controlled. They are hard to deal with.May be the teacher could not find the key to get inside. It’s high time to get the family in.
Once you provide your plants with the suitable soil ,it is time to water them.
B.The water(SMART tasks):
1.What is a SMART task:
S.M.A.R.T :these letters stand for Specific_Measurable_Achievable_Realistic and Time oriented.
The task should be precise,it covers one aspect so that learners do not get confused.
Results can be detected so that teachers can assess and find weaknesses for remediation.
The task should be suitable for learners level, needs and styles so that it can be reached. It should not be beyond their level.
It’s preferable to deal with real life problem solving situations to make learners communicate.
Any task should have a certain period of time to get the outcome.
2.How to design SMART tasks?
When the teacher starts designing his lesson plan ,he should take these aspects into consideration :
After the anlyses of learners needs ,the teacher designs tasks that are appropriate for their needs. Are pupils in need of enhancing social, emotional, personal skills ,all of them……..etc
The input that the teacher uses in the classroom must meet his learners interests.(their interests differ according to age ,gender …etc)
Gathering data about learners leads the teacher to choose the right tasks for each category. Some pupils learn better in groups ,others do not. Also, the choice of materials depends on learners styles .There are auditory,visual,tactile- kinesthetic learners.
Our plants got their soil and water, now they are in need of the final magical item the light or let’s say MOTIVATION.
1.What is motivation?
It refers to all the ideas and strategies that the teacher uses to engage his learners in the process. To increase their love for the subject taught .To establish a strong platform to have an efficient acquisition of the knowledge dealt with. It’s a kind of psychological preparation to make learners participate .
2.Some tips to motivate learners:
*Avoid boring subjects and encourage creativity.
*Give learners possitive feedback and reinforcement.
*Tell them about your predictions for their future.Example:Linda, you have such a smart brain,I expect you will be a famous scientist in the future…………etc Sara:I count on you . Ali:I need your help. ……………etc
*Involve learners.Learners talking time should be more than teachers talking time. They have to write on the board .It is said”Involve me and I learn“
Once we follow the steps above ,both teachers and pupils will get excited and will enjoy their sessions.
To sum up;our pupils are the future. They need to be planted in good circumstances yet they need continuous care.
Don’t say that this plant has thorns ,I won’t get closer. In fact,if we manage to get inside we will find plenty of useful elements.
LOVE,CARE,ENCOURAGE ;Motivate to be proud and to enjoy your teaching career.
