The 1st contact with learners is very important for the whole year. It is the bridge that links the pupils with their teachers. If we succeed in building a secure bridge right form the beginning then we will certainly reach our objectives as teachers.
In each 1st contact with learners , the teacher has to go through different steps , yet most of the time this is done in an ordinary way. In this post , we want to break the routine, we want to charm our learners right from the beginning . We want to take our magic wands to bewitch them and to cast a love spell that would last for the whole year and may be forever , who knows!
During 1st contact the teacher has to:
2.Ask learners to introduce themselves.
3.Tell learners about the necessary school objects.
4.Tell learners about the school rules that they have to follow.
5.Ask learners about their expectations for the year, what do they want from their teachers….etc
These are the most important things that the teacher has to deal with right from the beginning but instead of using a boring way of lecturing and ordering , let’s have fun using different games
1.The teacher introduces himself:
We always stand by the desk and we say : “Hello, my name is Mr(Mrs) X.
Let’s change this way by playing the hangman game. We ask learners to guess our names. They will have fun trying to guess their teacher’s name
The teacher writes : I am Mrs L.o…r as an example , the pupils start giving letters and of course , if they miss it they lose the game.
It’s a good way for revising letters implicitly.
2.The pupils introduce themselves:
Generally, the teacher asks learners to stand up and introduce themselves . Instead of that , ask your learners to design crowns and to write some important information
Full name , last year grades , health problem…
The teacher tells the learners that they are his princes and princesses so that he gets intimate with them.
Each pupil puts his crown on during the first sessions till the teacher memorizes the names.
If the teacher has a weak memory like mine , then they will put them for long*_^.
Pupils may go home and design better crowns.
3. School objects:
The teacher tells learners about the necessary school objects and as a point of change , he can provide them with printed covers to be put at the beginning of the copy book.
Also, he tells learners that the best copy books will get A star each 15 days . If the pupils gather 5 stars , they will get presents.
This idea will push learners to take care of their copy books right form the beginning, you don’t have to keep reminding them.
4. School rules:
Most of the time , the teacher stands in front of learners and says , you have to do your homeworks, you have to keep silent while learning………..etc
The teacher can design school rules box with cards. The teacher asks some learners to take some cards , they have to pass to the board then they mime the rules. The other pupils try to guess what does the teacher expect from them.
Example: A pupil takes the following card.
He can simply , use gestures by writing on the board and the other may understand that they have to rely on themselves to do the tasks because it is learners’ centered.
The teacher provides pupils with colored stickers, each pupil has to write one expectation . The teacher gathers the stickers on a board , he analyses them to have an idea.
We can keep them on the classroom wall for the other teachers as well.
By this , we end up the first contact with learners and we make sure that they will be waiting for the coming sessions. All it needs is a drop of love in a glass of care.
I hope that you like the ideas, your feedback is highly appreciated.
