The new generation curriculum came with new teaching terminology. This latter was a source of confusion to us as teachers. Many items have been inserted including the initial situation.
Personally, at the beginning , I didn’t understand what is this situation ? but after several analysis , I discovered that nothing is new , in fact , everything was dealt with before but in a different way. So , nothing is changing just the terminology that sets things clearer .
What is an initial situation:
During the beginning of each sequence , the teacher has to set the initial situation for learners . It’s the final objective that the teacher and the pupil will reach.
In the past , we didn’t use to tell our learners about our final objective , we used to teach them till we reach the goal.
Now , with the interference of technology and smart phones , pupils became digital and they started questioning the teacher’s methods, they started asking how and why do we do this. Unlike in the past , pupils were shy and they rarely dare to ask the teacher.
So, the initial situation is setting a goal right from the beginning , it is drawing a path for learners to walk on and to see the end of it even though they have not reached it yet.
How to deal with the initial situation:
Many questions have been asked about the period of time , a teacher should devote for the initial situation.
Well, it depends on the teacher’s objective , it may take 20 mn as it may take an hour.
How to explain it for learners , is it through discussion , pair work, flash cards…….etc
This question as well depends on the teacher’s strategies.
Today , I have chosen one of my initial situations . 2 M.S sequence one ME, My Friends and My Family.
We have one thing to talk about before we tackle the topic . How to introduce the new sequence and the initial situation within one session.
There is a hidden link between both aspects , we have to make it visible . How here is an example.
Learning objectives: By the end of the lesson ,pupils will be able to draw their family tree “revise family members” after introducing the new sequence and the initial situation.
*After greeting the learners, the teacher starts the lesson by showing a picture of a character that the pupils have seen during their 1M.S.
Then the discussion starts.
Who is this? ……….He is Omar.
What do you remember about Omar?
Pupils try to talk about Omar’s age, Country, city, family…….etc
Next , the teacher shows two other known characters for learners and asks them , Who are these?
They are Margret and Peter.
Who are they ?
They are Omar’s e-pals or friends.
Then, the teacher sticks other pictures on the board and asks learners, who are these?
They are Omar’s family members.
The teacher gives learners sometime to link the information and to guess the title of the first sequence.
Me, My friends and My Family.
Task1: I use the pictures to build Omar’s family tree.
The pupils pass to the board to build Omar’s Family Tree. They will write and revise family members.
(Grand parents “Grand father +grand mother”, parents “father+ mother”, sister, brother ,aunt, cousin, nephew, niece.
After that ,they copy down.
Task2:I look at the family tree then I complete the sentences:
….. name is Omar. ….. have a large family. Leila is my little sister. ….. is 11 years old,. …..favorite pet is a cat named LULU. Rachid is my elder brother. ….. is 18 years old,. ….. favorite sport is football. My parents are Fahima and Abdlaziz, …..are a nurse and a doctor, ….. favorite channel is National Geography. I love my family.
Pupils try to recall previously learnt knowledge about Personal pronouns and possessive adjectives to do the task.
Personal pronouns :
I, YOU .HE.SHE.THEY.WE.IT
Possessive adjectives: MY.YOUR.HIS.HER.THEIR.ITS
As a final step in this session the teacher introduces the initial situation.
The teacher shows learners Omar’s photo with all his personal information and asks them what do you see?
The Initial situation:
The Algerian ,ministry of education has organized a national competition about “ The best personal profile” written in English. Competitors are required to upload their profiles to the website of the ministry of National Education before December 20th .
The first three winners will be offered a four-week English language course In London next summer.
So, looking at Omar’s Profile ,can you tell me how to design one , what do you see? What do we need?
Pupils will give different answers
All answers are accepted , and the teacher tries to insert some new words for learners.
N.B: Pupils have already seen Introducing oneself during 1 M.S.
Now , we talk about the photo, what do we find in it.
Face , eyes , hair,……etc
We accept the answers even though they are in the mother tongue .
what do these information represent?
They represent Physical appearance. What does a person look like?
So, to make a profile we need to introduce oneself( name, age , city, country, nationality……etc) ; talk about family ; likes /dislikes , Photo( physical appearance)..etc
Homework: Design your personal Family Tree.
This is the way , I have decided to start my 1st lesson , with 2 MS . If you have any feedback , please feel free to post it.
