Teaching learners to hold a conversation in a dress store , shoe shop or any other shopping place is very important. Pupils are in need to be put in real life problem solving situations to learn how to use the language. The ultimate goal for teachers is to make learners able to use verbal and written messages to communicate.
Today, I have chosen this simple game , it can be designed in a few minutes , but it’ll leave it’s impact for long.
The popcorn game.
The objective: By the end of the lesson , pupils will be able to ask about price , size and color .
Target structure: HOW MUCH ,what color, what size…etc
How to apply!
1.Divide your pupils into groups of mixed abilities.
2.Each group has to choose a name for the group to start the competition.
3.provide each group with a cup that contains popcorn.
(popcorn pieces contain a jumbled dialogue)
4. Pupils work in groups to order the pieces to get a coherent dialogue between the shopper and the shop assistant.
5.When time is up, we correct and we gather marks to move to the next step.
6. A soft ball is given to the learners , they have to throw the ball from one group to an other to ask and answer questions with:
How much …? What size …? What color ………..?
They will use other types of clothes and shoes.
The popcorn game helps pupils to learn how to ask about the price , size and color and at the same time they revise different types of clothes and shoes.
Pupils can act out the conversations .
How to design your materials.
There are no easy materials as these.
1.Print some popcorn pieces , write your conversation on them , then use a tape of scotch to cover them.
2.Use any plastic cups that you have at home and stick the pictures on them .
3.You get your popcorn bag , fill it and use it with your learners.
