Each time we encounter new strategies and terminologies we find ourselves in front of plenty of doubts and questions.
In order to reveal the obscurity over a certain topic ,we have to understand and analyze it from all sides.
As we all see, teachers are doing their best to understand how to deal with the four situations ,in particular, the INITIAL SITUATION.
But before we ask about how to deal with it ,we have to ask ourselves:
*What’s the purpose of the initial situation?
*What are the benefits that a teacher can get from it?….etc
There are many positive results that the teacher and the learners will get from a successful announcement of an initial situation.
1.The Initial situation is an introduction to the new sequence:
When a new comer introduces himself to the audience ,he is breaking the ice ,he is allowing the others to get to know him better, he is arising questions and curiosity in them, they will feel eager to know more about him. So is the initial situation. It gives learners a general idea about what they are going to have, it makes them curious especially when the teacher uses interesting methods to deal with it.
2.It guides and directs learners:
Teaching is about guidance and help. Once we announce the initial situation, learners have to be guided towards a certain target or goal. They will start thinking about what they are to achieve during this sequence ,reward is a cornerstone in that stage.
3.It facilitates installing the resources:
When learners are guided and given a goal to think about, they will feel responsible, they will start searching for more information, they will ask, they will add and make teaching more interesting and this may push the teacher to search for more to fill in any possible gaps.
Now since we have had an idea about the goal of the initial situation ,we can answer some questions
1.Should I keep the sequence words unclear for learners , then they will discover them with time?
Personally, I think if we keep saying sequence one is “Me, my abilities, my interests and my personality “without explaining the key words then we have done nothing new .
We have to shed some light over the key words ,then within the lessons we will explain in details and discover more to install the resources.
2.Should I write the initial situation on the board?
It’s not necessary to write it on the board, you have to explain it using ICT’s, flash cards, audio ,gestures or any facilitating material.
At this stage , I think that a mind map is a solution, instead of writing a passage, make it a plan ,that would sound better.
3.Is it solved at the beginning?
The initial situation is like a puzzle, you keep gathering pieces till the end of the sequence to get a clear picture.
