Teaching is not just about giving information then testing learners. Teaching goes beyond that. Modern teaching aims at creating a new generation of learners who are able to use the language to communicate orally and in written messages.Talking about that means that the teacher has to put huge efforts to reach this objective.
This later is difficult to be reached if we only rely on what a teacher provides learners with. In fact, the tiny number of hours devoted for a subject like EFL is not helping at all. If I suppose that my learner uses English for two to three hours a week, how am I asked to create a new learner who is able to communicate, it seems impossible but if we follow certain strategies we may help a great number of learners, not all of them for sure, to be competent at least by producing simple yet understandable exchanges(orally or written) through the enhancement of the following skills.
Using the dictionary
1.Listening: The teacher should encourage his learners to listen to authentic materials outside school. He can provide them with titles, links and videos if possible. Also, he can provide them with tasks so that they listen for a purpose and the teacher can assess their work. Nowadays, the teacher can have a contact with his learners via e-mail so that it becomes easier for him to correct and keep in touch with them even during holidays.
2.Reading:The second receptive skill is reading. The learner can’t write well constructed paragraphs if he doesn’t read much. To enhance that, the teacher can create reading challenges between learners, they can choose books or it’s preferable to use stories of interest. Also, the use of reading clubs where learners can discuss together .
3.Writing: A productive skill that is most of the time considered the mirror that reflects the pupil’s level. Encouraging learners to write can be done in different ways:
a.Through reading challenges :Learners are supposed to write summaries for what they read, here they put all their efforts to practice writing to win the challenge.
b.Through magazines and group work: The teacher can divide learners into groups and provides each one of them with a topic to write about for the school magazine . This way, we’ll have a diversity of topics and learners can exchange works and assess themselves and their peers.
c.Through peer correction: I have used this technique recently to empower the level of my learners who are really struggling to improve. I have chosen about ten learners (the best in the class) to help their classmates because ,as a teacher, I can’t correct 200 paragraphs each week(200 pupils, it’s impossible). My learners were pleased to help me and they were proud to be little teachers. Each week quick achievers exchange papers between each other to better their levels and for slow learners they give their papers for the pupil who is responsible for them( from the ten learners chosen). In this way, I make sure that my learners are practicing writing regularly .
d. Through e-mails: I provided learners with an e-mail (learners’ e-mail) so that they write more and send their writings to me to be corrected.
Using the dictionary:The learners have to befriend the dictionary not just using it during pronunciation lessons, in fact, they have to use it on a regular basis. So simply, you can ask your learners to check two to three words a day, the next session you try to choose some words to talk about meaning and pronunciation( this aims at enriching vocabulary and pronunciation).
These are some of the ideas you can use to help your learners with, if you have other ideas , please don’t hesitate to share them with us .
