Teaching sounds explicitly is no more used because with the new development in the teaching methods, educators found that explicit teaching is useless since it doesn’t allow the learner to use his own intelligence. To guarantee an efficient learning , we ,as teachers, need to guide learners only, therefore, we have to approach the implicit way of teaching.
To teach vowel sounds, learners have to figure up the difference in pronunciation themselves, how!!!!!
Using the puzzle game is the best way to ensure that your learners work on their own and set rules themselves.
1.You have to print ,cut and laminate your puzzles.
2.Divide your learners into groups of mixed abilities.
3.Provide each group with an envelope that contains the given puzzles.
4.Tell learners that it’s a competition to make them do their best while working(motivation).
5.Pupils have to pronounce words and gather each three of them that contain the same sound in one PUZZLE piece.Learners rely on their background knowledge so the teacher should not judge them if they make mistakes.
6.Once they finish the first step, they can choose a representative or a spy to have a look at the other groups’ work.
7.Correction on the board, learners pass to the board, draw a table and the whole class work to classify the words without setting the sound symbols.
8.Next, the teacher provides learners with an other envelope that contains the sounds. Pupils have to use the dictionary, they will check the words and they will figure up that the words with the same sound have a common symbol.
9.Finally, we correct on the board as a whole class to match each sound with its symbol.
10.For more practice you can use any kind of games, like I show you , you pronounce or they can simply check their copybooks for words that contain the given sounds and classify them.
